Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
