The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
