European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
